Akko is a city in northwestern Israel. It sits on a low promontory at the northern tip of Haifa Bay. From ancient times, Acre was thought of as an important connection to the Levantine East because of its strategic location on the coast.

Akko has been under the leadership of many nations and empires throughout history- from the Persians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Egyptians, to the Syrians, Maccabeans,  Armenians, Jews, Arabs, Crusaders, British, to the Crusaders again, Mameluks, Ottomans, to the French, Ottoman Turks again, and to the British before its current status a s part of Israel.

The old city of Acre has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and contains a tunnel leading to a 13th century fortress of the Knights Templar. Since the 1990s, there are numerous works of archeological excavations and preservations of ancient structures. Acre has one of the highest proportions of non-Jews of any of Israel's cities with a one quarter Arab and Druze population, as well as a small community of Bahá'ís. The city is a magnet for tourists with its beautiful walled Old City, ornate Mosques and other ancient structures.
